India Facing Its Moment of Destiny
The entire subcontinent was once a colony of the British Empire. It was, without a doubt, the brightest jewel in the crown, and the British nurtured it, thinking they would rule the subcontinent for the next 500 years.
Unfortunately, the British got into a war with Nazi Germany, and though Germany was defeated, it turned out to be a pyrrhic victory. They lost their Indian empire within two years of the end of the war. The British ruling class was bewildered; they wondered how they could retain their privileges in the subcontinent. They thought it best to carry out a division on religious lines, and they began to propagate the idea of a separate Muslim state in the subcontinent. The Muslims, who had earlier been the rulers of the subcontinent before the British rule, were feeling out of their depth, thinking what would become of them in a Hindu-dominated world. They accepted the British proposal, and thus the state of Pakistan was established. The British assumed that Pakistan would be their lackey for all time to come, but it didn’t happen that way, and it ended with Britain losing all influence in the subcontinent and also its great power status.
